A revolutionary new product has arrived in the field of 3D printing - and it is none other than the Phrozen Sonic Mega 8K S. After its recent launch in August, you may be wondering... Is there really any difference between the original Sonic Mega 8K and its successor, the Sonic Mega 8K S? This review will answer that for you.
Like the Sonic Mega 8K, the Sonic Mega 8K S features the same 15" print area with stunning 8K resolution and 43 microns. Both printers have a unique perforated build plate and dual linear guide mechanism for the best printing experience, and use the same 405nm paraLED light source for optimal accuracy. But most importantly, both will give you an excellent 3D printing experience regardless of your experience.
Some people might think that the Sonic Mega 8K S is simply a cheaper version of the previous Sonic Mega 8K, and while it's true that this bright green friend is one of the most affordable large format resin 3D printers on the market, there's more to it than that.
Sonic Mega 8K for engineers and researchers vs Sonic Mega 8K S for printing farms
The Sonic Mega 8K is designed for engineers and developers who need a reliable device for rapid prototyping or generating accurate and detailed models. On the contrary, the Sonic Mega 8K S is designed to be a productive monster for miniature farms and 3D printing businesses, thanks to its strong and long-lasting release film and lightning-fast printing. So Sonic Mega 8K S is the best companion for small businesses that want to provide customized objects with high production efficiency.
Sonic Mega 8K S also comes with a new type of opening compared to its predecessor. The light green acrylic cover is designed to lift up, which is great for those with minimal space on the XY axis, but more space on the Z axis. Another difference will be the size of the touchpad. The Sonic Mega 8K has a 5-inch touch panel, while the Sonic Mega 8K S has a slightly smaller one at 3.5 inches.
Although the Sonic Mega 8K S shares the same XY print space as its 33x18.5cm predecessor, they differ in height. The print volume of the Sonic Mega 8K is 10 cm higher than the Sonic Mega 8K S. But, if you are printing a really large model, the print speed of the Sonic Mega 8K S can easily compensate for this fact.
Additional Features on Sonic Mega 8K S
Phrozen is constantly striving to innovate and improve your 3D printing experience. That's why the new Sonic Mega 8K S has been carefully developed with customer comfort and experience in mind. It thus brings with it new functions.
Built-in Drip Hanger
Since the Mega build board can be very heavy when you are printing a lot of models or large models, a DIY dripper made of resin or FDM might not be the safest choice. That's why Phrozen included an all-metal built-in resin dripper directly on the printer. When you're done printing, you simply remove the build plate from the arm and hang it on the dripper while all the excess resin drips off your models and back into the container. This way, you can save every last drop of resin and keep your workplace clutter-free.
Compatible with Pump & Fill
One of the least fun parts of printing large models is having to add resin during printing. Not only can you forget to do this with many duties, but if not done correctly, it can also create unwanted offset lines on the models. To solve this problem, Phrozen has developed an add-on for automatic pumping and filling of resin using a pump – Pump & Fill. Made specifically for the Sonic Mega 8K S so it will integrate without any problems. You can set everything directly from the touch panel of the printer and you are ready to print.
Before adding another resin printer to your collection, you should consider your printing habits. If you're looking for something with reliable speed and efficiency for fast production, the Sonic Mega 8K S is a great choice for you.
For best results, you can also combine the printer with Cure Mega S and Wash Mega S for easy post-processing of large models.
